Missionary Disciples: Pointing People to Jesus

Columba's Kitchen

Columba's Kitchen opened in April 2023 and is designed to alleviate food insecurity and help meet the needs of local people. The Pantry is a collaborative enterprise between Plus Dane Housing Association, St Andrew's Community Network and Liverpool Football Club all working together with us here at church in delivering this food provision. In order to explain what the Pantry is, what we do, and if you can join, we've set out the answers with some questions below.

What is a food pantry? Is it a food bank?

Pantries differ to foodbanks. Foodbanks are often used in an emergency or crisis situation. A pantry differs in that it is a food membership co-operative. You choose to join and you choose what food you'd like. The pantry is designed to supplement your weekly shop. We are conscious that food prices have rocketed in recent months and everything is more expensive. The pantry is about getting more items for less for you and for your family.

How much does it cost?

The pantry costs £3.50. You can pay this by cash or card when you attend. This money enables you to purchase 10 items (often worth around £15) and includes fresh meat, fruit and veg as well as longer life items such as pasta, rice etc. Please note fresh items are limited and we cannot guarantee stock each week. The money that you pay doesn't go to any of the organisations named above, what you pay in is re-invested in order for the pantry to function.

Can I join?

If you live in the parish of Saint Columba you can join the pantry. It is not means tested, simply come along and sign up.

If you don't live inside the parish boundaries but you have children at Rosie & Jim's Nursery or Pinehurst Primary School you can join up! To check, simply enter your address here and your parish church will be listed.

What are the benefits?

  • Saving £100s annually on food shopping bills!

  • Promoting sustainable food habits & reducing waste!

  • Volunteering opportunities & learning new skills!

  • Joining a friendly & supportive community!

Why are you doing this?

We believe that people have the right to food, but we recognise that this can be a struggle sometimes, particularly in light of the ever changing world in which we live. We are committed to help make a difference in this community of Anfield and are passionate about being seeing people flourish. Often the church is labelled as constantly taking, whilst giving little back. At Saint Columba's we take seriously the call of Jesus to serve and we hope that this service will be a blessing to you.
